JSS With Boarding Wings To Charge School Fees

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has said only Junior Secondaries with boarding wing will be permitted to charge fees.

Machogu stated at the offices of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi that only schools with boarding wings will be permitted to collect fees.

“No school should charge any fees for Grade 7 learners unless such schools have boarding wings,” he said.

Given that almost 70% of secondary students are day students, Machogu said additional resources should be devoted to expanding these schools.

He encouraged all boarding schools to implement day wings to increase accessibility and reduce the expense of education.

This he said, is also consistent with CBC criteria for parental participation in curriculum delivery.

On January 30, 2023, students will be obliged to report to their respective junior secondary schools.

Machogu stated that 14,000 public schools were evaluated, and more than 13,000 qualified as Junior Secondary school hosts.

OMn onday, the CS spoke during the Form 1 selection process at KICD, Nairobi.

“So far, more than 13,000 schools have met the Ministry of Education requirements for Junior secondary schools,” he said.

Machogu added that the Kenya Kwanza administration will pay Sh15,000 every primary school student.

“The government has set aside Sh9.6 billion for the learners and will pay Sh15,000 for each student,” he said.

The Ministry is conducting a comprehensive evaluation of all public and private schools around the nation to establish their readiness to accept learners to Junior Secondary School.

The exercise, which began on January 9, 2023, will end on January 20, 2023.

The school evaluates, among other things, whether the specific school has sufficient acreage to host the Junior Secondary School level, the availability of classrooms and laboratories, and an acceptable water and power supply.

On January 13, 2023, a total of 14,589 public and private schools had been evaluated. Of these schools, 13,221 were allowed to host Junior Secondary Schools.

“I direct our multisectoral teams to work round the clock to ensure they completethe assessment exercise by the 20th January, 2023 deadline.
