Initiative to Recruit More Teachers is Little & Late, Lobby Lament Kenya’s State of Education

Members of Elimu Bora have expressed worry over the status of the Kenyan educational system.

On Tuesday at the Kenya Human Rights Commission’s offices, the group informed the press that the implementation of the CBC curriculum was accelerated.

The lobby described the action as placing the horse before the cart, arguing that the initiative to recruit more teachers is too little, too late, given that the calendar resumes on January 23.

TSC said in December 2022 that 30,000 teachers will be hired in the new year, but only 8,000 of them will be placed in permanent pensionable positions.

“Is there enough time to train the 30,000 on the new education system, bearing in mind that most of the currently engaged teachers do not fully understand and embrace the new system? ” the group posed.

The group said that the decision to hire 22,000 teachers as interns is a bad labor practice.

“With only 13 days to go for JSS to start, a lot remains to be done,” the group said.

According to Elimu Bora, the heightened insecurity of students at school has resulted in a large number of horrific and pointless student deaths.

Lobbyists requested that the government do more to provide Kenyans with a quality, inclusive, cheap, and lifelong education.

The group asserted that the government must preserve, respect, and fulfill the right to education.

In addition, the lobby encouraged the Ministry of Education to ensure effective and extensive consultation with education sector stakeholders and public participation in decision-making.

Members of Elimu Bora requested TSC to ensure the prompt recruitment, training, and deployment of skilled instructors.
