The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced 35,550 teaching openings in elementary and secondary schools, providing thousands of unemployed tutors with respite.

According to the notice sent on Friday, December 9, the nationwide teacher shortage will be mitigated by the mass recruitment of teachers.

“TSC invites applications from qualified candidates to fill the vacancies to support the implementation of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC),” read part of the notice.

There were 9,000 permanent and pensionable positions for secondary school teachers and 1,000 permanent and pensionable positions for primary school teachers among the vacancies posted.

In addition, the TSC announced the availability of 21,550 internship positions in junior secondary schools and 4,000 positions in elementary schools.

The TSC’s announcement followed the government’s vow to hire 30,000 teachers for the 2023-2024 school year.

“The Ministry of Education, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and the TSC will work on modalities of fast-tracking retooling teachers to ensure the country has sufficient numbers who are compliant with CBC,” read part of the statement shared by the State House Spokesperson, Hussein Mohamed.
