Grade 7 Subjects and Grading; What You Should Know

The students who have started their junior secondary education this week are learning 12 core subjects and two optional subjects.

This is compared to the five subjects studied by their 8-4-4 counterparts in Standard Seven.

The core subjects include English, mathematics, pre-technical studies, Kiswahili, integrated science, social studies, business studies, agriculture and religious education.

In addition to these, learners are also studying health education, sports and physical education, and life skills.

The students can choose a maximum of two out of seven optional subjects, including visual arts, performing arts, home science, computer science, a foreign language (German, French, Arabic, Mandarin), Kenyan Sign Language and indigenous language.

Headteachers have selected teachers with degrees to teach in the Junior Secondary School (JSS).

These teachers have been downloading materials and using digital gadgets to teach their students.

The new grading method in JSS will not be based on marks but rather on the abilities of the students.

This system will use “exceeding expectation” and “below expectation” in their assessment. The teachers are using digital devices to teach the students and allow each learner to demonstrate what they have learned.

The Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) will provide guidelines for standardised School-Based Assessments (SBA) to be administered by the subject teacher at Grades Seven, Eight and Nine.

The new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) teaches through group work or using digital devices, projectors, and resource persons.

The subjects in CBC are more compared to 8-4-4 and involves the learners a lot.

The teacher groups the learners and gives them activities after which they demonstrate what they have learned.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has distributed at least five textbooks to schools.

The KICD CEO, Charles Ong’ondo, said that the only challenge is some learners whose schools were not approved to host JSS are still finding schools of their choice.

Teaching is ongoing and he found many teachers qualified to teach JSS, including those with PhDs.

The Coast regional education boss, Adan Roble, said teaching is ongoing in all schools in the region and most of the schools have recorded 100% transition.

In conclusion, the students who have started their junior secondary education this week are studying more subjects and will be assessed differently compared to their 8-4-4 counterparts in Standard Seven.

The new grading method will not be based on marks but rather on the abilities of the students and the teachers are using digital devices to teach their students.

The transition from 8-4-4 to the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is smooth and teaching is ongoing in all schools.
