Grade 6 Pupil’s Body Discovered Decomposing in Borehole
Five days after she was reported missing, the body of an 11-year-old grade six student at Ekoro primary school was discovered in a well on the property of her grandmother in Manga sub-county, Nyamira.
Mary Arita was reported missing on March 29, 2023, after allegedly being sent by her grandmother, with whom she resides, to collect a debt from a Ting’a village neighbor and never returning.
According to Everline Kwamboka, a resident of the same compound, the elderly woman instructed the deceased to collect a debt from a nearby community as soon as she returned from school.
She stated they reported the missing person to the area chief’s office and the local media outlets the following day.
Kwamboka stated that on Monday, April 3, her instincts led her to a well within the compound. Upon opening the well, she observed an ‘object’ at the water level and immediately contacted a neighbor who suspected the ‘object’ to be human.
They then sounded the alarm, which drew in the villagers. The area’s acting administrative chief dispatched the police from the Manga police station to retrieve the decomposing body from the well.
The principal of Arita’s school, Absolom Ondieki, stated that the deceased attended school on Tuesday of last week and later attended a sporting event at a nearby school without displaying any signs of stress.
He reported that she did not show up the next day, prompting him to send her colleagues to check on her, and her guardian reported her disappearance to the school on Wednesday afternoon.
Ondieki said that they had been hoping for the girl to resume back to school since then, but unfortunately, they had been hit by the sad news of her death that morning.
He further mentioned that the school was mourning the loss, and the girl’s schoolmates were tormented. He also requested the investigating agencies to unravel the mystery behind her death.
Alex Joel, her fourth-grade teacher, described the deceased as a well-mannered young lady.
Since I’ve known her in fourth grade, she’s been of impeccable character and demeanor; we only ask the government to solve the mystery surrounding her death, Joel said.
Her body was transferred to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
