Mukumu Girls Resumes Learning with 1800 Out of 2028 Students

Learning has fully resumed at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls in Kakamega County, with the majority of students returning to school.

The multi-agency team, led by the Western Regional Commissioner Samuel Irungu Macharia, visited the school to assess the situation and recommend improvements for sanitation.

School Principal Jane Mmbone reported that out of 2028 learners, over 1800 have already returned to Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls.

However, some students, particularly those in form one and two, opted for transfers to other schools.

Nonetheless, a small number of students are expected to report to school soon, completing the return of the student body.

Assessment by the Multi-Agency Team

Contrary to information circulating on social media, the multi-agency team confirmed that there was no new disease outbreak at the institution.

After an extensive tour of the school, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Water, Public Health, parents’ representatives, and the Principal, RC Samuel Irungu Macharia urged those spreading falsehoods about the school to refrain from doing so and allow students to focus on their studies.

To address sanitation concerns, the school has undergone significant improvements.

The Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency (LVNWWDA) has connected Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls to a new water supply.

Additionally, a new water purification and chlorination plant is nearing completion, and more handwashing points have been established.

These measures ensure safe drinking water for the students. The school has also sunk a borehole to provide additional water to the institution.

Other corrective actions include renovating the food store to enhance ventilation and improving the flooring in the store.

Furthermore, new maize stock has been brought in and properly dried before storage to prevent moisture-related issues.

Infrastructure Development

The Regional Commissioner acknowledged the challenges that come with the 100% transition to secondary education, such as overcrowded classrooms and dormitories, which strain the school’s sewage system.

However, he assured that the government is dedicated to improving infrastructure in schools.

Collaborations with NGOs and other partners are underway to enhance infrastructure and sanitation.

In particular, the Water Resource Management Authority is working with The Water Project and Friends of Timothy to provide water in schools across Mumias West, East, and Navokholo sub-counties.
