Parents who enroll their children in secondary schools or in continuing classes will not be forced to clear fees, according to the Education CS Magoha.
The government will allocate Sh2 billion for free primary education and Sh16.9 billion for free Day Secondary Education one week before the start of the new academic year.
“Every school will have money, before they open, the money will be in the bank by Tuesday so they have one week to plan,” Magoha said.
Magoha issued a stern warning to school administrators who may be tempted to dismiss students with arrears at the beginning of the term, which begins on April 25.
“Nobody should send the child away from schools that they have no money to run the schools, that will be criminal, the money belongs to the government, the children belong to the government,” he said.
He also advised parents whose children were assigned to far-flung day schools to report to the nearest education centre so that the problem could be resolved.
He was speaking at the Nairobi region’s annual education conference for beneficiaries of the Wings to Fly and Elimu scholarships.
Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi has said that the portal is now open for the submission of applications for both the Elimu and Equity-Wings to fly scholarships.
“Today we have opened the website so that kids can apply online, we will release the application forms to all the branches then we will give scholars six days to apply,” Mwangi said.
The vetting process and beneficiary selection will be completed in two weeks, allowing students to join form one.
