Govt Shut Down School in Kisii With Only One Student and Nine Idle Teachers

Govt Shut Down School in Kisii With Only One Student and Nine Idle Teachers.

The Karungu Secondary School in South Mugirango, Kisii County, was recently forced to shut down due to a lack of students returning after schools reopened in January.

Henry Onderi, the Kisii County Director of Education, confirmed the closure of the school, citing that it was not practical to keep it running with only one student and nine idle teachers deployed to the school by the Teachers Service Commission.

The director also disbanded the school’s Board of Management for their failure to properly manage the school.

In response to the closure, the director stated that the students from Karungu Secondary School would be relocated to nearby schools and that the Sub-County Director would facilitate their transition.

He noted that some schools in the county were not economically feasible with the low number of students and available teachers.

Poor performance in the Kenya Certificate Secondary Education was identified as one of the factors that deterred parents from enrolling their children in certain schools.

The director also emphasized the crucial role that parents play in enhancing the performance of schools.

He stated that the performance of a school cannot solely be the result of one person and that parents should support the schools in their locality.

This was evident in the selection of high schools by 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education candidates, as secondary schools with a history of good performance in national examinations attracted an overwhelming number of applicants for form-one slots.

Education Cabinet Secretary Machogu also acknowledged the issue, blaming poor guidance from parents for the preference of a few schools.

He stated that some schools receive an excessive number of applicants, which makes it impossible for all candidates to be placed in their desired schools.

In conclusion, the closure of Karungu Secondary School highlights the importance of parents playing an active role in supporting their local schools and improving their performance.
