Govt Bans Schools From Selling Uniform, Threatens Crackdown

Trade, Investment, and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has recently questioned the need for compulsory school uniforms in schools, stating that school uniforms have little to no impact on the quality of education that students receive.

In a briefing in Nairobi, Kuria opined that there is no necessity for school uniforms and that schools should not institute any type of clothing policy.

This statement comes after Kuria put on notice schools that sell uniforms within their facilities, stating that they are in violation of the law.

According to Kuria, schools that are selling uniforms within their facilities are colluding with uniform-makers to sell their products exclusively within the school, which is detrimental to Kenya’s manufacturing sector.

“We are mixing the issue of education with school uniforms because a few people, who are pre-enjoying this space of selling school uniforms, are colluding with schools. When you hear that a school is selling uniforms ask them where their sewing machines and tailors are.”

With 40,000 primary and secondary schools in the country and a student population of close to 14 million, Kuria sees this as a huge market and an opportunity for the country’s economy.

Kuria also stated that parents should have the freedom and discretion to choose where to buy uniforms for their children.

He further added that his Ministry will send out trade officers to various schools across the country to ensure that institutions are complying with his directive and that schools should not sell uniforms as it is illegal.

“This is one major way to awaken our sleeping economy. Our schools are not going to be used as conduits by those people who are used to having it very easy. It is better to have more people at the bottom of the pyramid making uniforms than to have a handful of people doing that business.”
