Govt Announces 6,000 Internships for TVET Students

The Kenyan government has announced that it will offer 6,000 internship opportunities to diploma and certificate students studying in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutes and polytechnics.

The placements will be in different Export Processing Zones (EPZ) and will be made available to students pursuing pharmaceuticals and apparel. Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria confirmed that the internships will be allocated through members of parliament, using a similar model to the one used to allocate bursaries through the Constituency Development Funds.

Kuria made the announcement during the launch of the careers and TVET day at Tetu Technical and Vocational College in Nyeri County, accompanied by Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto and other local leaders.

The announcement of the internship programme comes after Public Service Commission announced plans to recruit 1,300 TVET trainers, in line with President William Ruto’s pledge to increase the capacity of TVETs. The internships for diploma and certificate students will supplement the 20,000 opportunities announced by President Ruto in various government agencies.

President Ruto has also pledged to convert TVET institutions into digital academic organisations. In phase one, computers will be distributed in 100 TVETs, and every academic organisation will have a digital laboratory.

The internship programme is an important opportunity for TVET students to gain practical experience in their fields of study and enhance their employability prospects. By partnering with members of parliament, the government can ensure that the opportunities are distributed fairly across the country.

The government’s commitment to increasing the capacity of TVET institutions and making them digitally-enabled will help to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in the country’s growing economy. These initiatives will also contribute to the government’s efforts to reduce youth unemployment and promote inclusive economic growth.
