George Magoha is Dead

On January 24, former Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha passed away.

According to his family, he experienced a cardiac attack in the Nairobi Hospital while receiving treatment.

James Nyamongo, the hospital’s chief executive officer, confirmed the death, claiming that Magoha passed away shortly after arriving at the facility.

“It is with great regret that we announce the sudden and untimely demise of Prof George Magoha this evening at the Nairobi Hospital.

“Magoha collapsed at home and was rushed to the hospital’s accident and emergency. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Kindly join me in condoling with his family,” Nyamongo announced.

The former Education administrator’s remains were transferred to the Lee Funeral Home.

His wife, Dr. Barbra Magoha, and son, Dr. Michael Magoha, survive him.

His passing occurs less than a week after he was named a lecturer in medical surgery at the Maseno University School of Medicine.

The former CS had just buried his late brother, Professor Richard Magoha, who had passed away in December 2022.

The last time Magoha appeared in public was when he turned over the Ministry of Education to his successor, Ezekiel Machogu.

The former CS, a no-nonsense academic, will be remembered for his reforms in the ministry, particularly in addressing test fraud and indiscipline in schools.
During his tenure as head of education, he shortened the marking period for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) (KCSE).

The experienced academic community was crucial to the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Between 2005 and 2015, he served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi (UoN) before being appointed chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).
