Former Maasai Mara University Vice Chancellor (VC) Mary Walingo exhaled a sigh of relief after being reinstated to her position by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

In a statement released on September 7, PSC Chief Executive Simon Rotich ordered the reinstatement of the former head of Maasai Mara University pending the outcome of an anti-corruption case.

Walingo was dismissed in 2019 due to allegations of corruption.

A portion of the statement read, “The appellant be reinstated back to her employment on suspension pending the hearing and determination of the Anti-Corruption Case and/or until her contract is legally terminated.”

The CEO also directed that the former VC receive half of her salary and benefits from the date of her suspension.

Walingo was immediately suspended after a Citizen Exclusive article titled “Money Heist” implicated her in an alleged Sh177 million corruption scandal involving other university staff.

Following the exposure, Walingo was ordered to step down in 2019 to allow the Directorate of Criminal Investigation to initiate investigations.

Prof. Kitche Magak was appointed to take over after her departure, before being succeeded by Joseph Chacha in January 2022.

Along with four other university officials, Walingo was charged with ten counts of corruption for withdrawing money irregularly beginning in 2016.

Walingo filed an appeal against the university council’s decision to fire her in court in May 2022.

In May 2022, she appealed the university council’s decision to fire her.

She subsequently dropped the case after demanding close to Ksh7.5 million in damages and compensation for what she claimed was illegal.
