Fired TSC Teacher Defied Odds To Open Top Private University

Many people are turned down for jobs on a daily basis, but very few take up the challenge as a mission to acquire the entire building after they become successful.

Dr. Simon Gicharu, the founder of Mount Kenya University (MKU), was fired by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) but overcame all odds to open the top private university in Kenya.

He stated that after losing his job, he became a laughingstock among his friends, who claimed he was a failed graduate. That, however, did not deter him.

To support his family, the MKU founder began selling milk to make a living.
“I did my rounds in an old Chevy pickup. Friends laughed at me, calling me a ‘failed graduate’. But this didn’t shake me. Self-belief is the key to success,” he noted.

The tycoon shared on social media that he once applied for a teaching position at Inoorero University but was turned down.

He went on to say that the cycle repeated itself for a few years after that, but his success never waned.

Several years later, after Gicharu had established himself financially, he returned to the institution that had denied him a teaching position.

This time, he wasn’t looking for work, but rather wanted to buy the entire building, most likely with everything in it.

“Ever been told by a potential employer, “don’t call us, we will call you”? I have, severally. At the School of Professional Studies, where I sought a teaching position, I walked away crestfallen.

“Several years later, I went back and bought their building,” shared Gicharu alongside photos of the building.

The Youth Finance Entrepreneurship Assistance movement member who founded Mount Kenya University was the nation’s first higher education institution.

After being fired by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and labeled a ‘failed graduate,’ the tycoon hawked milk for a living in 1995.

He didn’t let it stop him either. His school has an estimated student population of 50,000.
