Peter Tabichi Named Commonwealth’s Outstanding Teacher

Peter Tabichi has been named the Commonwealth’s outstanding teacher or school leader.

Tabichi, a science teacher at Keriko High School, was honored at the Commonwealth Education Awards.

Tabichi implemented a program to ensure that students continued to learn despite the Covid-19 break.

“Since majority of our students come from underprivileged backgrounds I donate 80 percent of my income to education projects,” Tabichi said.

The award, which he received for the second time, will provide him with a platform to teach and provide opportunities to underprivileged students, according to the second-time teacher of the year.

During the conference, six nominees were recognized as champions of innovative and transformative ideas.

The nominees were chosen based on their ability to devise effective solutions to educational challenges while also creating space for experimentation.

The awards were divided into six categories.
The first category was education as a path to peace, and the Positive Youth Africa Afrogiveness project was a finalist.

The finalist in the second category, rethinking education for work, is Educate! Uganda.

Maria Kramvi, a finalist in the third category of the Youth Awards, beat out over 1000 applicants in her category.

Peepul CM Rise is in the fourth category, rethinking education for innovation.

The fifth category is a contribution to Education for Inclusion, a girl child network project led by Dennis Mutiso in Kenya.

Kenya is hosting the 21st Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM), which began on Wednesday in Nairobi with a call from ministers for urgent strategic actions, innovative solutions, and renewed commitments to rebuilding better, resilient, and inclusive education systems that can withstand future crisis.

The two-day Conference, themed ‘Rethinking Education for Innovation, Growth, and Sustainability Post-Covid-19,’ will provide ministers, policymakers, civil society, and development partners with the opportunity to engage with one another.

The partners will also share knowledge and best practices, and explore trends and innovative approaches that member countries can adapt to develop sustainable and resilient education systems.

Prof. George Magoha, the incoming Chair of the CCEM from the Ministry of Education, stated that the shock caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and other disasters has highlighted challenges.

He noted that the challenges require a rethink of learning and education, learning spaces and processes such as engagement of parents and communities, access to quality learning for children and young people from the most disadvantaged households, remote learning with connectivity a priority.
