ECDE Teachers In Lamu To Be Trained On CBC.
Lamu has approximately 370 teachers, 276 of whom work in public Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers and 94 in private pre-primary schools.
So far, 90 people have been trained in four of the ten wards: Mkomani, Shela, Hindi, and Faza. The majority of Lamu ECDE teachers are unfamiliar with the Competency-Based Curriculum, so mass free training has begun.
The training aims to provide teachers with knowledge of CBC and how to implement it at the most basic level so that children’s experiences align with CBC in primary school.
Abdalla Ahmed, the chief executive officer of Lamu Education, stated on Thursday that training is required because many ECDE teachers are unfamiliar with the new curriculum.
“The Education department studied the quality of Lamu’s early childhood education, which identified the gap. This prompted us to increase teachers’ capacity to fully support the ECDE growth strategy,” Ahmed said.
He stated that all ECDE teachers, both public and private, would be contacted. Mpeketoni, Kiunga, Witu, Mkunumbi, Basuba, and Hongwe are also included in the program. The program is expected to be completed by the end of June.
Teachers will be able to design and interpret the CBC framework and curriculum, observation schedules, written examinations, journals, rating scales, learner profiles, and projects by the end of this training, according to Ahmed.
He stated that the county is dedicated to raising educational standards, as well as providing infrastructure support and learning and teaching materials.
“Plans are underway to employ more teachers and ECDE supervisors for coordination and quality assurance,” Ahmed said.
Athman Kheir, Lamu ECDE coordinator, encouraged teachers throughout Lamu to take advantage of free training and improve the quality of ECDE.
The training comes just a few days after the county sent five new ECDE supervisors to Lamu. Lamu education stakeholders have developed a county action plan to address key areas in which harmonisation and collaboration are required.
Over 30 education stakeholders from the county, education board, Ministry of Education, Teachers Service Commission, and the Agha Khan Foundation participated in the exercise.
The Aga Khan Foundation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and TSC, sponsored the workshop.
The stakeholders agreed on an action plan for harmonising education curriculum from pre-primary, primary, secondary, and technical colleges at a joint workshop held at the Lamu Vocational Training Centre.

They discussed a number of issues that would allow for consolidation and harmonisation in order to lay a solid foundation for providing high-quality education in Lamu.
They want Lamu’s education to meet international standards of excellence.
According to Abdalla Ahmed, the chief officer of education in Lamu county, important harmonisation concerns include the implementation of sound management practices and accountability procedures.
He also stated that the plan considers harmonising education programs through collective consultative meetings, sports, common training, resource sharing, and maintaining an up-to-date TSC data bank on teacher registration at all levels.

“There is also need to build teachers’ capacity to implement Competency Based Curriculum, teacher induction, mentorship and coaching, remote learning in public primary and secondary schools,” Ahmed said.
Ahmed went over the county’s roles and functions in ECDE and TVET, as well as the milestones and road maps covered in order to improve educational quality and accessibility for all.
He emphasized the importance of education harmonisation, describing it as a catalyst for improved performance and long-term development.
