MP Wants Life Sentence Legislation On Academic Certificate Forgery

A member of parliament, wants the next legislature to pass legislation making the falsification of academic credentials a capital offense.

According to Opiyo Wandayi, the laws must mandate a life sentence for anyone found guilty of the crime of fabricating, procuring, or fraudulently obtaining a degree certificate.

Speaking to the media in Siaya town, the Wandayi who oversaw the Public Accounts Committee in the current parliament praised the government organizations that have taken on the task of looking into allegations of certificate fraud by some of the candidates for different political positions.

“We want to elevate the offence to the level of murder or robbery with violence in order to act as a deterrence. We shall be proposing necessary amendments to the penal code when parliament resumes at the earliest opportunity” said the legislator.

The best way to deal with the threat, according to Wandayi, that if left unchecked will ruin the future of the nation, was to impose such a deterrent sentence.

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, wants the next legislature to pass legislation making the falsification of academic credentials a capital offense.

He urged other agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, to take decisive and ruthless action against everyone who will be found guilty.

The lawmaker, who also serves as the director of political affairs for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, has since advised the United Democratic Alliance, which is led by deputy president William Ruto, to stop being cry babies who use ODM as the punching bag every time they face frustrations in their campaigns.

All political parties are required to follow the law, said Wandayi, adding that ODM had nothing to do with the complaints of its rival.

He claimed that the UDA leadership’s ongoing grievances and complaints might be an attempt to create grounds for contesting the results of the upcoming general elections after sensing defeat.

“I want to caution UDA and its leadership that rejecting the results is their business, they are free to do so but they should not dare foment any trouble in this country,” he said adding “that we shall not allow as members of the ODM and Azimio coalition.”
