Coding And Robotics Centre Launched In Kakamega

A digital learning solutions provider has opened a coding and robotics center in Kakamega.

This will provide students with alternative pathways to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) courses.

STEAM is an approach that incorporates the arts into the more commonly known Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Wycliffe Kibisu, Managing Director of Dschool World of Learning, stated that the center is open to students, parents, teachers, researchers, and schools who want to enhance their learning experiences.

He said teachers, students, and parents will find a solution to their various needs at the facility.

Educational researchers will also access resources they can use to improve the delivery of their papers or educational content.

The Robotics Centre will be used to teach the necessary skills for the twenty-first century, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and data analytics.

These skills are very important for children, and they are mostly acquired between the ages of 2 and 9.

According to Kibisu, if children do not acquire these critical skills, by the time they reach high school or university, there is very little a teacher can do to help the student succeed.

The Robotics and Coding Centre is an additional solution offered by the institution to kickstart the program, which involves learning through educational games.

Dschool World of Learning is launching the program in collaboration with Jumpstart California and Robotics from Korea, and Japan.

The Director urged schools to use the facility, which has ample resources, Smartclasses, and a science arcade, to learn and improve performance in the STEAM field.

Schools such as Booker Academy and many other Compassion schools in Kakamega have adopted the model of learning through games as well as the use of coding and robotics.

He claims that the program is designed to ensure that no child enters a classroom without the necessary skills.

Aside from excelling in class, students gain necessary skills that nurture their character and prepare them to compete in the job market.

“Children who have completed the program have a strong command of language, science, and mathematics, as well as a strong command of character,” he said.

The educational game jumpstart program began in 2007 with the Director’s three children as pioneers.

After an outstanding performance in physics, one of the students has been accepted to McGill University.

Philip Amuyunzu, a Lecturer of Physics at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, stated that they are interested in transitioning students who join the institution of higher learning to pursue STEAM courses.

He stated that the university has been using Arduino Balls for practicals, but with the launch of the Robotics Center.

The university will begin using the center to teach some of the courses.

Amuyunzu also stated that the institution’s planetarium will be beneficial to the University as it prepares to introduce a new course called Astrophysics.

The Coding and Robotics Centre, according to the Lecturer, is a significant boost to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and President Uhuru Kenyatta’s recent rollout of the coding curriculum in primary and secondary schools across the country.
