Kenya’s Eastern Province (Swahili: Mashariki) was one of the country’s eight provinces.

Its northern border was shared with Ethiopia; its east and south borders were shared with Ethiopia; and the rest of Kenya’s provinces, including Central Province, ran along its western border.

Embu was the provincial capital.

The province was subdivided into three sub-provinces on July 16, 2009, namely lower eastern with Machakos as headquarters, central eastern with Meru as headquarters, and upper eastern with Marsabit as headquarters.

However, those changes were never implemented due to political wranglings in Kenya’s coalition government at the time.

The provinces were subdivided in all seven Kenyan provinces, with the exception of Nairobi.

Following the Kenyan general election in March 2013, the Eastern Province was subdivided into eight counties, namely:

The Meru, Kamba, and Embu tribes, as well as several pastoralist communities, dominated the province.

The province had a population of 2.7 million in 1979, 4,631,779 in 1999 (according to the 1999 census), and 5,668,123 in 2009.

In terms of land area, it was Kenya’s second largest province (140,698.6 km2).

The climate in the area ranges from arid to semi-arid.

Ewaso Ng’iro is its most important permanent river.
