Drama Festivals Kick Off in Machakos Region
On Monday, the Eastern region drama festivals for secondary schools began at Katoloni Secondary School, featuring exciting performances from students.
The event was officially launched by the Machakos Deputy Governor, Mr. Francis Mwangangi, and will run until Thursday.
Students will showcase various genres including choral verses, plays, modern dances, comedy, spoken word, and narratives. The theme for this year’s festival is fostering digital transformation through film and theatre.
More than 120 schools from the eight counties in the region will participate in the competition. Winners will represent the Eastern region at the national drama festivals taking place in Mombasa in April.
Mr. Mwangangi emphasized the importance of the festivals in identifying and developing learners’ talents, preparing them for professional careers in film and theatre, in line with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Additionally, the Deputy Governor stated that the festivals empower students with social skills such as teamwork, confidence, and attention.
By participating in the performances, students can improve their self-esteem and develop other soft skills that will benefit them in various aspects of life.
Simon Maina, the Regional Quality Assurance and Standards Officer, also spoke at the event, saying that the government is committed to establishing academies to ensure that the talents of the students do not go to waste.
He assured participants of transparency and fairness during the competition and noted that adjudicators are people of integrity who would ensure that the best performances win.
The principal of Katoloni Secondary School, Mr. Francis Ndimu, expressed his delight at hosting the regional festival after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.
He assured participants of adequate facilities throughout the competition and stated that the festival not only showcases talents but also enhances learning and discipline.
In summary, the Eastern region drama festivals for secondary schools have commenced, featuring various genres of performances by more than 120 schools from eight counties.
The event aims to identify and develop talents in learners and prepare them for professional careers in film and theatre.
