Don’t Abolish CBC, Says Parents Association

The National Parents Association (NPA) has acknowledged that the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) faces obstacles that must be addressed before full implementation.

In the past few weeks, stakeholders have expressed worry about the 1,2 million children transitioning from sixth grade to junior high school and the restricted number of available classrooms.

Eskimos Kobia, secretary general of the Association, stated that the task group would be useful in finding and pursuing answers to the difficulties.

Kobia noted the issue of junior secondary schools (JSS) and classrooms as one of the primary challenges that had yet to be adequately addressed.

However, Kobia quickly warned against sudden adjustments, stressing that many man-hours and resources had been invested in establishing CBC.

Kobia remarked that many schools had benefited from two or three classrooms, adding that this was insufficient owing to many grade six learners graduating.

He provided the example of Naivasha’s Mirera High School, which has one of the highest student populations in Nakuru County.

The school has almost a thousand kids and will welcome Form One students and tens of others under CBC in January, yet it only has two new classrooms.

James Muiruri of the Elimu Bora foundation stated that approximately 3 million pupils would enroll in secondary and junior secondary schools in the upcoming academic year.

He described this as a huge dilemma, particularly for secondary institutions that would host thousands of kids from primary schools.

“In January, 1.6 million students will be joining Form One under the 8-4-4 system while another 1.2 million will be joining the same schools under CBC,” he said.

Richard Nyayal, an educator, stated that although CBC is not being implemented properly, it should be fixed and not eliminated.

He noted that much time, effort, sacrifice, and money had been invested in this endeavor.

He also stated that a solution must be found to the double transition of grade six and class eight candidates.
