CS Machogu Reinstates Sacked Kenyatta University Council Management
Prof. George Magoha’s decision to designate Prof. Chrispus Kiamba as the chairperson of the Kenyatta University Council has been reversed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
Education Cabinet Secretary has nominated a new chairperson and two council members for Kenyatta University.
In a gazette notice published on Friday, CS Machogu terminated Prof. Kiamba and replaced him with Shem Migot-Adholla, who had been ousted from the same position by the previous government over Kenyatta University land disputes.
The CS appointed Eric Kindon Sila and Mary Mugo to serve as members of the new council for one year each.
Prof. Shem Migot Adholla will preside over the council for one year beginning today, November 4, while Eric Sila and Mary Mugo will serve as council members for the same duration.
The notice stated, “In exercise of powers conferred by section 36 (1) (a) and (d) of the Universities Act, 2012, the Cabinet Secretary for Education appoints Shem Migot-Adholla, as the chairperson and Eric Kindon Sila, Mary Mugo, as members of the Council of Kenyatta University for a period of one (1) year with effect from 4th November 2022.”
The nominations of Professor Chrispus Kiamba, Jane Wamoko, and Carilus Odero Odumbe have been canceled, according to a 4 November gazette notification.
Mr Migot-Adholla was dismissed after he refused to deliver the university’s title document to the Ministry of Lands for excision, maintaining that the institution’s long-term development master plan covered every square inch of the plot.
In the course of four months, Prof. Paul Wainaina was fired and then reinstalled as Vice-Chancellor following a dispute at the university.
Prof. Wainaina was replaced in an acting capacity by Prof. Waceke Wanjohi after being removed from his position at the Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) for a land dispute.
The nomination of the new council follows the Wednesday reinstatement of KU Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wainaina by the administration of President William Ruto.
Prof. Wainaina was terminated in August of this year following a dispute with the government over the university-owned property.
Prof. Wainaina and the council, led by Mr Migot-Adholla at the time, had objected to then-President Uhuru Kenyatta’s request that the government allot a portion of the land to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The university professor said that how the land was handled was an example of land grabbing. This made the former head of state very angry.
Prior to his dismissal, Wainaina asserted that the council and the Acting VC had been hand-picked to permit the excision of 410 acres of university property.
