Coast 2nd largest TTC officially opens doors for students

The opening of the Sh300 million Kwale Teachers Training College (KTTC) for students has given a significant boost to the education sector in Kwale County.

The college, located in Kinango sub-county, becomes the Coast region’s second-largest teachers’ training college after Shanzu TTC in Mombasa County, allowing young people in Kwale to continue their education after completing high school.

The first admissions were made on October 12 and that about 30 students are currently undergoing orientation.

“We received the first 30 students, who are upgrading to diplomas in early childhood development and in primary teacher education for one year,” said Principal Hellen Machuka adding that 134 trainees are expected in the intake.

Classroom construction is complete, and Ms Machuka stated that administrators are working around the clock to finish hostels so that students can live on campus.

A temporary dormitory has been established in the county’s nearby social hall. The girls are spending the night at a nearby polytechnic while their dorm is being built.

As the number of students increases, the college will stimulate economic activity in the area, with more businesses expected to be established to provide the necessary services.

In 2018, the county assembly passed legislation to establish a teacher training college in order to increase access to higher education for Kwale’s youth.

Last year, the board of management was established, and a principal was appointed.

During an impromptu visit to the college earlier this month, Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya stated that if projects are successfully completed, the county will see more development.

Aside from the TTC, Kwale is expected to host the region’s largest maritime training college, which will attract students from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The East Africa Maritime College will be built in Waa, Matuga sub-county after the county government handed over the land to national officials.
