CBC Curriculum Not Overloaded – KICD

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development’s CEO, Professor Charles Ong’ondo, has reassured the public that the new Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) does not add any extra burden to the Grade 7 learners.

According to Professor Ong’ondo, the number of subjects remains unchanged, whether it be the 7-4-2-3 or the 8-4-4 system.

He stated that even if some of the learning areas were to be reduced, the content would still need to be covered in other subjects in order to meet the 45 hours of learning per week.

The professor also pointed out that a critical analysis of the CBC system would reveal that it actually has the same number of subjects as the previous education systems.

In a recent event where the Education CS, Ezekiel Machogu, flagged off the distribution of Grade 7 textbooks at KICD, he mentioned that the government is considering the learning areas that students in JSS will cover.

He stated that the government is aware of the numerous learning areas and will work on making sure that it will not be a burden to the learners.

Currently, the government has approved 12 compulsory learning areas, with learners expected to choose a maximum of two optional subjects.

These subjects include Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Agriculture, Integrated Science, Health Education, Social Studies, Religious Education, Pre-Technical and Pre-Career Education, Business Studies, Life Skills, and Sports and Physical Education.

In addition, learners are required to take a minimum of one and a maximum of two optional subjects from Virtual Arts, Performing Arts, Home Science, Computer Science, Foreign Language (French, German, Arabic), Indigenous language or Sign Language.

The CEO noted that the JSS curriculum is broad, with 12 learning areas and several optional subjects, giving learners the opportunity to explore and find their interests before settling into a specific pathway.

He stated that the learning areas are designed to align with the eight national goals at each stage of learning, giving students the opportunity to experience the goals.

The main goal of education, according to Professor Ong’ondo, is communication and integration, and this is reflected in the subjects of English, Kiswahili, and a foreign language.

He also pointed out that with the introduction of a foreign language, learners will have the opportunity to learn about international relations and integration.

Professor Ong’ondo explained that the CBC system is structured to offer learners an early opportunity to interact outside of the home in pre-primary, and to socialize through numeracy, literacy, and social studies in primary school.

The 12 core subjects and optional assessments will be referred to as the Kenya Junior Secondary Education assessment, while the pre-vocational level assessment will be referred to as Kenya Pre-Vocational Level Education Assessment, with learners being assessed in nine subjects.

Both formative and summative assessments will be conducted in JSS and pre-vocational levels, with the Kenya National Examination Council providing guidelines for standardized assessments.

The end of Grade 9 national summative assessment and the formative assessment scores will be used to guide the placement of learners in senior secondary school pathways.

Finally, Professor Ong’ondo stated that KICD is mandated to develop curriculum and curriculum support materials, which are then evaluated before reaching the final consumers.

He called on stakeholders, including the Kenya National Union of Teachers, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, and Universities Academic Staff Union representatives, to be patient as change is always accompanied by discomfort.

He also challenged those who are criticizing the CBC, stating that if there is any burden in the new system, the unions should also own it.
