Breakthrough in Utalii Student Murder Case: Two Arrested
Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of Job Chihonyi, a 25-year-old student from Utalii College, who was brutally killed on February 5, 2023, near the college along Thika Road.
The suspects, Maxwel Omukuba Shisika and Kevin Ngechu Wanjiru, both 21 years old, were apprehended following an intensive forensic investigation that placed them at the crime scene during the heinous act.
According to police reports, Chihonyi was attacked by the suspects just a few meters away from Utalii College. The suspects allegedly robbed him of his mobile phone and stabbed him in the chest with a knife before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
Despite efforts by well-wishers to save his life, Chihonyi was pronounced dead upon arrival at Guru Nanak Hospital. The investigation was led by detectives from Starehe, with support from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau based in Nairobi Area.
They meticulously gathered evidence and pieced together the missing links to establish the involvement of the two suspects in the crime. The suspects were eventually traced and arrested from their hideout in Kariobangi North on April 14.
During the arrest, a knife suspected to have been used in the murder was recovered from Omukuba, and a mobile phone believed to be the proceeds of the crime was found in Ngechu’s possession.
Additionally, a black motorcycle with registration number KMGF 828K, which was allegedly used as a getaway vehicle, was also recovered. The recovered items were kept as exhibits for forensic analysis.
Both suspects are currently in custody awaiting charges of murder, as per Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code. The area where Chihonyi was attacked has been identified as a black spot for similar criminal activities, with thugs often targeting victims and fleeing to nearby Mathare slums.
Witnesses reported that Chihonyi and others were waiting at the Traffic headquarters bus stop on Thika Highway to catch a matatu to the city center when the suspects on a motorcycle attacked him. He reportedly put up a struggle, but was overpowered and fatally stabbed in the chest.
