Students who excelled in their KCSE exams last year will be clamoring for the best undergraduate courses this year to give them the best start in their chosen career. So, what are the best A-level courses?

The majority of candidates who receive an A in their KCSE are drawn to engineering, actuarial science, and medical programs. That being said, the following are some of the best courses that are considered to be reserved for the best minds in the country.

1. Medicine and surgery

A Bachelor of Medicine degree is one of the best options for students with an A in KCSE. The course is completed in six years, three semesters at a time. Students who achieve 82 points or higher in their KCSE have a good chance of being accepted into any of the universities that offer this course.

For regular students at the University of Nairobi, the minimum entry requirement for this course is an A plain. Students with an A- grade, on the other hand, can enroll in this course at Kenyatta University, Moi University, or Maseno University.

  • Passes in Biology and Chemistry are required.
  • A supplemental pass in Mathematics or Physics, as well as a B plain in English or Kiswahili.

2. Biomedical engineering 

Students with an A in their KCSE can also pursue a Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering at top universities. The four-year program aims to provide students with innovative skills needed in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of medical devices and equipment.

Mathematics: B+- B+ in Physics, – B+ in Chemistry, and – B+ in English

3. Civil engineering 

Students with an A grade can pursue a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, which is one of the marketable courses. A-minus in KCSE is the minimum entry requirement for admission into this course in public universities under the regular program.

Students with an A average have a good chance of being accepted into the program. The following are the minimum grades for the individual cluster subjects:

  • C+ in math,
  • C+ in physics, and
  • C+ in chemistry
  • A in Biology or Geography. 

4. Aeronautical engineering 

A Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering should be at the top of the list for top students who want to work in the aviation industry. The five-year course is extremely rare.

The majority of top students choose to pursue this course because the pay is competitive and there are numerous job opportunities for program graduates. You must have at least a C+ in the following subjects; Physics, Chemistry, and Biology

5. Architecture 

Bachelor of Architectural Studies is a very appealing career path for students who have passed their KCSE exams with flying colors. This course is offered at several top universities in the country, including UoN, KU, and JKUAT.

To be admitted to the program, you must have a minimum grade of C+ in the following subjects:

  • Mathematics: C+
  • C+ in either English or Kiswahili
  • A in Physics, Biology, or Chemistry
  • C+ in Geography, History, or Religious Studies

6. Electrical and electronic engineering 

The electronics and engineering degree program places a strong emphasis on providing students with hands-on experience in engineering technology. This course has a minimum entry requirement of a B minus.

An A plain or A minus in KCSE improves one’s chances of acceptance into the program. Candidates who want to take this course must have the following minimum grades in the individual cluster subjects:

  • Mathematics: C+
  • A in physics and
  • B+ in chemistry
  • C+ in Biology or Geography

7. Law 

Students enrolled in this program can gain a solid understanding of the principles of the legal system not only in Kenya, but also globally. The Bachelor of Law program lasts at least four years, or eight semesters.

For regular students, the minimum entry requirement for this course is an A minus in KCSE. Candidates who wish to enroll in this course must have a KCSE English score of at least B plain.

UoN, KU, Strathmore, and JKUAT are among the top universities that offer this course.

8. Computer science 

The Bachelor of Computer Science is one of the best courses available to top students. Graduates of the program are given solid practical skills for dealing with day-to-day problems in the information technology sector.

This course is available at JKUAT, UoN, KU, and Egerton. The following are the course prerequisites:

Mathematics: B+, A in physics and a B+ in English

9. Pharmacy 

Graduates of the Bachelor of Pharmacy program are expected to be knowledgeable about the promotion and delivery of curative and preventive health care. It takes five years to complete the course.

The following are the prerequisites for this course: A- in Chemistry and A- in Biology, B- in Math or Physics, B- in English or Kiswahili
