BBI Will Not Get Teachers Support TSC Continues Fighting KNUT. Sossion Says

KNUT Secretary General Honorable Wilson Sossion has warned that teachers will not support the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) if the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) continues with its discrimination against the union.

Speaking in Baringo County during the union’s branch elections, Sossion remarked that teachers would not back the BBI unless things get better.

“Our relationship with TSC is not a choice. TSC must respect KNUT and the independence of KNUT, and engage KNUT within the framework of the law.” Sated Sossion.

The ODM nominated MP has been chanting praise to BBI, but this seems to be changing with KNUT. Sossion remarked that KNUT would oppose all efforts from the commission targeted at paralyzing the union.

“Who is this at TSC who is intellectually deficient who imagines that they that cannot engage strong unions and therefore the only thing to do is to kill?” Posed Sossion

Records show that the former giant union has been reduced to a shell due to mass exodus of its members. KNUT membership has reduced from 187,000 to a mere 23,000.

The union’s revenue has lessened, from Ksh 144 million to Sh 15 million, against a salary portfolio of Sh 80 million for over 600 workers spread across the country.

“WhenCompetency-based teachers, will they perform well? Even this thing called Competency based Curriculum (CBC), are teachers really understanding and delivering as it should be?” asked Sossion.

A recent report indicated that over 32,000 who quitted KNUT have been promoted. TSC and KNUT have, over the recent months, been involved in a fight over various matters affecting the education sector.

These concerns range from Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA), disbursement of funds as well as the promotion of teachers.
