Baringo To Employ More ECDE Teachers And Increase Bursary Kitty To Sh270 Million
Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis has stated that the county administration will increase the bursary fund to Sh 270 million in order to benefit more students.
Governor Kiptis stated that the bursary increase will benefit a greater number of students, including those from areas affected by persistent insecurity who dropped out of secondary school due to a lack of fees.
Kiptis stated, while addressing a crowd outside his office in Kabarnet town on Friday, when he disbursed Sh 42 million to 3, 569 beneficiaries, including learners in Vocational Training Centres, that plans are in the advanced stages of enrolling students from low-income families in various courses at colleges and universities.
“The county executive has agreed with Members of County Assembly (MCA’s) to increase the kitty in the next financial year because it will have a greater impact on society in the long run,” he said.
The governor of Baringo stated that his administration has already established strategies and long-term policies aimed at improving the education sector, particularly in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) and Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET).
Governor Kiptis stated that his administration is advocating for a change in approach to have the various TVET institutions in the county identified by a specific competency area, which he claims will not only attract more learners but will also streamline its equipping and infrastructure support.
“Our intention is to have our TVET institutions stick to at most three core courses so that they can easily build on that and churn out graduates who are ready to compete on the ever-competitive job market,” he said.
The Baringo governor also stated that a total of 642 ECDE classrooms have been built and equipped across the seven sub counties, resulting in an increase in enrolment, which is currently at 51, 335 learners.
He stated that the county has a total of 1, 668 ECDE teachers under the Teachers Service Commission and that they plan to hire more to cover a 398-person shortfall.
Learners in 973 schools benefited from the event, which was also attended by Deputy Governor Jacob Chepkwony, CEC for Education Dr David Sergon, and County Assembly Committee Chairperson for Education John Tarus, with the majority of the bursary going to Koibatek, Baringo Central, and Marigat sub counties.

Kiptis, on the other hand, has refused to issue cheques to beneficiaries in three Wards in Tiaty West, Mogotio, and Koibatek Sub Counties until the county education committee reconciles a list of learners with the number of schools.
Since the start of devolution, the county government has distributed over Sh 290 million to secondary schools in and around Baringo.
