Alcohol, Drug Abuse Among Students On The Rise

On Friday evenings, the entertainment venues near university campuses are usually packed. The majority of customers are under the age of 26, primarily students.

Others throw parties in hostels. Some are also held off-campus.

For new students, the parties have become initiation events for alcohol and other drugs.

The rate of drug abuse among university and college students is alarming, with some ending up in rehab. Some have even dropped out of college.

Many students who do not consume alcohol are usually into cigarettes, bhang, and other drugs.

Those who do not use drugs are either members of religious organizations or have chosen not to.

Some students become addicted which is difficult to overcome. Simple things like paying attention in class have become herculean tasks.

Alcohol, cannabis, heroin, and tobacco are all popular drugs.

Methamphetamine (meth) and codeine are also available over the counter.

Some students according to Nation sneak drugs into their rooms for use and sale. They also make cannabis cookies. And drug use is not limited to a single gender.

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) is investigating the scope of the problem at universities.

According to recent research on the prevalence of substance abuse among primary and secondary school students, individuals are exposed to substances at a young age.

The findings on primary school accused adults of introducing drugs to children.

According to the study, 23.4 percent of secondary school students have tried alcohol, 17% have tried marijuana, 16.1% have tried prescription drugs, and 14.4% have tried tobacco.

It also revealed that 7.5% had used marijuana, 1.2% had used heroin, and 1.1% had used both (cocaine).

According to a general population survey, alcohol is the most abused substance, with 12.2 percent of people aged 15 to 65 actively using it.

Alcohol abuse also contributes the most to the burden of substance use disorders, with 10.4 percent of the population aged 15 to 65 years addicted, followed by tobacco at 8.3 percent, miraa at 4.1%, and cannabis at 1%.

According to a fact sheet survey on emerging trends in drug and substance abuse in Kenya, released in early July, prescription drug abuse is also widespread throughout the country.

Twelve of the 18 counties sampled had confirmed prescription drug abuse.

Nairobi, Garissa, Meru, Marsabit, Makueni, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Busia, Kisumu, Uasin Gishu, and Nyeri are among the counties affected.
