A 45-year-old primary school teacher has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for defiling a Standard Six student five years ago.
Senior Principal Magistrate David Ndungi said yesterday that Fredrick Mwangi Wango violated the child's rights rather than protecting her.
According to the court, Wango enticed the child to his Mathare estate home on March 20, 2016, around 6 a.m., as she was on her way to school.
According to the prosecution, Wango locked the girl in the house and went to school. He returned shortly after 9 a.m.
When the girl didn't return home later that evening, her uncle, a police officer, contacted the school.
Wango initially denied holding the girl in his home, despite reports that she spent time there.
The child's guardian then went to the teacher's house and found the girl still dressed in her school uniform." Wango was arrested, and the girl was taken to a city hospital for examination."
The girl had been sexually assaulted, according to medical reports presented in court. The court ruled that the teacher had converted the girl into a wife when she admitted to sneaking from western Kenya to live with him.
“The prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused defiled the girl,” Mr Ndungi said.
The magistrate went on to say that Wango's testimony did not need to be corroborated because medical reports provided sufficient evidence.
Wango's mitigation was rejected by the court. The teacher had requested a second chance in life to reform and care for his two children.
“Your children’s rights are not superior to those of the girl you defiled,” Mr Ndungi said.
Wango threw down a face towel and the Bible he was reading immediately after the sentence
“Jesus, why have you forsaken me yet the scriptures said I would be freed?” He yelled, raising his hands.
"You are righteous, Jehovah God, but what has happened to me?" Do I really deserve this, Jesus, my Saviour? What have I done to deserve it?”
Wango attempted to flee as he was being escorted to the cells by a warder. The warder beckoned a colleague to accompany her as she escorted him to the cells.
Wango's drama began last week when he wept and collapsed after being convicted. He was ordered to remain seated while the court rendered its decision.
