30,000 Google scholarships: How to apply.

Google has announced 30,000 additional Android and Google Cloud training opportunities in Africa for aspiring and professional developers.

The program, which will be carried out in collaboration with Andela and Pluralsight, aims to increase the number of certified software developers in Africa.

Prospective applicants can apply for the scholarship through this link by May 31, 2022.

The announcement coincides with the annual Google I/O developer conference, where Google will share more information about Africa’s thriving developer ecosystem.

“Opportunities for software developers in Africa are at an all time high. At Google, we have been supporting developers in Africa through community and training programs for over 10 years.

“Today, there are more than 180 active developer communities in 30 countries across Africa that provide developers with the opportunity to connect, learn and grow together,” said Mr Kimani.

Last year, 10,000 Google Developer scholarships were awarded across Africa to beginners (with little or no programming experience) and 5,000 to professionals (with +1 year of experience) in the Android and mobile web development tracks.

Successful applicants will have access to carefully curated content on Android app development with Kotlin and Google Cloud, which will prepare them for Associate engineer level certification.

In addition, they will have access to a pan-African network of peer learning groups and community mentors to help them along the way.

According to Google and Accenture’s 2021 Africa Developer Report, opportunities for software developers in Africa are primarily driven by the thriving startup ecosystem and global demand for remote work.

The ADR report evaluated how technology companies can speed up access to these opportunities through education and training programs that improve job readiness.

According to the report, nearly one in every two developers in Africa has participated in a Google developer training or community program.
