3 Junior Secondary CBC Options For Govt Outlined
The Kenyan government has outlined measures available to ensure that Grade 6 students transition to junior secondary school smoothly.
Over 1.2 million students will apply to junior secondary schools in 2023, according to the Ministry of Education.
The government has proposed the following possibilities notwithstanding the paucity of existing infrastructure, particularly in the availability of science laboratories, to facilitate this transition.
Conversion of classes
The Ministry of Education is contemplating transforming current classrooms into laboratories, one of the obstacles that hindered the advancement of students under the defunct 8-4-4 system.
Existing classrooms will be converted to ensure that junior secondary students are domiciled in primary schools
.
Sharing of laboratories
Sharing laboratories between junior secondary schools and existing secondary schools is another option that the government is evaluating.
Junior secondary students will be domiciled at primary schools, but they will attend secondary schools in the area for scientific labs.
Construction of new labs
The government will expedite the construction of new science laboratories in primary schools if the two alternatives are determined to be unworkable.
To ensure a seamless transition in January 2024, this will be completed within a year.
The Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) may be eliminated, but President William Ruto allayed parents’ concerns.
The transition from the 8-4-4 to the CBC education system, in my opinion, was the appropriate choice for the nation.
On January 4, 2023, the President stated, “There are certain difficulties with the transition, but as a government, we will ensure that everything is perfected in due time.”
