According to authorities, eleven people were murdered in an early Tuesday morning fire at a school for the blind in central Uganda.

“The cause of the fire is currently unknown but so far 11 deaths as a result of the fire have been confirmed while six are in critical conditions and admitted (to hospital),” the Uganda Police Force said on Twitter.

The incident occurred at the Salama School for the Blind in Mukono, southeast of the capital Kampala, at approximately 1:00 a.m. (2200 GMT) on Monday.

The police stated that an inquiry into the cause of the fire had been initiated but did not indicate whether all of the victims were students at the school.

Salama was constructed in April 1999 for children and young adults aged six to twenty-five.

In recent years, several school fires have broken out in the East African nation.

In November 2018, someone set fire to a boarding school in southern Uganda. Eleven boys died, and 20 others were badly burned.

According to a tweet from the district, two students were injured in a gunshot at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in St. Louis on Monday morning, and police say the perpetrator is in custody.

St. Louis Public Schools tweeted, “Police are at Central Visual and Performing Arts this morning in response to reports of an active shooter, and both CVPA and Collegiate are on lockdown.”

The post says police quickly stopped the “shooter inside CVPA.”

According to the school district, two students were hurt and transported to the hospital.

The Metropolitan Police Department of St. Louis tweeted, “Our department responded to an active shooting this morning at Central VP School.” A suspect has been apprehended.”

The high school is a magnet school located six miles southwest of the city’s central business district.

The district added that students are being evacuated from the campus and transported to “safe and secure areas.”

The public is asked to avoid the area.

The shooting was reported on the same day that Michigan student Ethan Crumbley pleaded guilty to murder charges for a school shooting in Michigan last year in which four people were murdered, and seven others were injured.

And on November 1, Nikolas Cruz will be sentenced for the February 2018 massacre at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 people were killed.

As the massacre in St. Louis unfolded, a prosecutor in Michigan addressed the nation’s gun violence epidemic in the wake of Crumbley’s plea hearing on Monday.

“It’s not just about sharing with other departments. Gun violence is preventable, that’s what I’ve learned. And the fact that there is another school shooting does not surprise me – which is horrific,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said.

“We need to keep the public and inform the public … on how we can prevent gun violence. It is preventable, and we should never ever allow that to be something we just should have to live with.”
